High Protein Chocolate Mousse

If you had told me 10 years ago that I’d be making desserts from TOFU I would’ve said NO FREAKIN’ WAY. 

But this is one of my all time favorite desserts… and not just a weeknight “healthier” dessert! I genuinely LOVE it any night of the week and would serve it when entertaining! 

After making a chocolate mousse from tofu in my Oreo Chocolate Cream Pie I knew I had to highlight this deliciousness on its own.

If you’re a chocolate lover, you’re going to LOVE this easy dessert that feels hella decadent!

Ingredients to Make High Protein Chocolate Mousse

No, this chocolate mousse does NOT get its high protein stamp from cottage cheese, despite the viral trends right now.

It does get its high protein stamp of approval from an unlikely source, however… TOFU!

One package of silken tofu contains 20 grams of protein! When you also add nut or seed butter, you’ll get a generous protein punch per serving (more on that below).

To make this recipe you’ll only need 5 ingredients, including:

  1. Silken tofu (NOT firm or extra firm tofu!!!)
  2. Mini chocolate chips (although, use whatever chocolate you have!)
  3. Coconut oil – to help the chocolate melt better
  4. Unsweetened cocoa powder – for an even chocolatey-er flavor
  5. Nut or seed butter

Silken tofu has a creamy texture when blended, unlike firm or extra firm tofu that’s more crumbly.

Since I’m claiming this dessert is “high protein,” what does that mean? 

Per serving, it contains 8 grams of protein. While that may not seem like a ton of protein, it is for a dessert!

Even more, it contains 3 grams of fiber per serving and healthy fats, so it is definitely filling.

Want to boost the protein even more?

Instead of unsweetened cocoa powder you could add chocolate protein powder. If you’re enjoying this chocolate mousse as an afternoon snack you may wish to have more protein, in which I’d add the protein powder.

How to Make High Protein Chocolate Mousse

This recipe couldn’t be easier to make! 

First, you’ll melt your chocolate. This adds the decadent chocolate flavor you love in chocolate mousse.

Next, you’ll blend together the chocolate mousse. Add the tofu, cocoa powder, nut or seed butter, plus the melted chocolate to a high-powered blender or food processor. Blend until smooth.

You will need to pause to scrape down the sides to make sure all the ingredients are well-combined.

I like to refrigerate this high protein chocolate mousse for at least 30 minutes before serving, but that’s not mandatory – you could serve it right away! 

How to Serve High Protein Chocolate Mousse

Since I know you’re going to be making this recipe often, here are some ways to serve it…

  • With fresh fruit – I prefer raspberries or strawberries
  • Dollop of whipped cream
  • In my Oreo Crusted Chocolate Cream Pie
  • In a “Cup of Dirt” (recipe coming soon!)

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized bowl add the chocolate chips with coconut oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted. Set aside.
  2. To a high-powered blender or food processor add the silken tofu, chocolate protein powder or cocoa powder, nut or seed butter, the melted chocolate and salt.
  3. Blend until smooth, pausing to scrape down the sides of the container so all of the ingredients are well-combined.
  4. Transfer to a container with an airtight lid and refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving.
  5. Serve with fresh raspberries or strawberries and whipped cream, if desired.
