After a year on TikTok I shouldn’t be surprised by some of the trends that, well, trend, but some things never fail to surprise me. The latest case-in-point is the BUTTER BOARD trend.
If you’re not on TikTok or haven’t seen these butter boards, this whole trend started as a new take on charcuterie boards. But move over meat and cheese… meet BUTTER.
Essentially you take softened butter and spread it all over a platter and top it with unique toppings. This can be anything from crispy bacon and caramelized onions to sweeter takes like cinnamon and sugar.
If you’ve ever had butter explode in the microwave when you’re trying to melt it for recipes you very well know that butter is difficult to clean up. So am I fan of this trend? I honestly think it’s easier to just spread some butter on your bread.
BUT… I had to make a fun twist on this traditional board because I knew my 3-year-old would eat it right up… enter a SUNBUTTER BOARD!
Perhaps just as messy (I’d argue not, though!!), but I’m always looking for FUN ways to get my kids to eat more nutritious foods.
Would I make this for myself when I want a SunButter & Jelly sandwich? NOPE. But for my kids? SURE THANG! This is SO much fun for playdates!
This SunButter Snack Board features original and chocolate SunButter intermixed with homemade raspberry chia jam for a nutritious twist with tons of fun.
A SunButter Board is…
- Fun to make
- 100% messy
- Customizable
- A great snack for a crowd
- DELICIOUS!
This “recipe” is more of a guide on how to make a bomb SunButter Board, but of course you can customize based on what you have on hand and what you’d like to include in your board. I have tons of suggestions below…
A note on portion sizes…
I love this eating style for those who are working on trusting their bodies and improving their relationship with food because it’s the ultimate challenge. You have a huge portion in front of you and YOU get to decide how much to eat. YOU get to decide what you include in your board.
If you begin to place restrictions on yourself, you may boomerang back to over-eating. But if you give yourself unregulated permission to eat how much you want, then over time you’ll learn to eat until satisfied, knowing you can always make another board at another time and/or eat again when you’re hungry.
This is why making a board like this is great for kids. Kids are born intuitive eaters and naturally can regulate how much to eat, stopping when their bellies are full.
Ingredients to Make the Best SunButter Board for Snack Time
Snack time is sacred in our house and 9 out of 10 times it includes SunButter. I mean… these protein bars are almost a weekly food prep staple. Plus there’s freezer fudge, lactation bites, yogurt dip and more.
So I knew a SunButter Board had to be a SunButter SNACK Board!
You can use ANY ingredients that you have in your fridge/pantry, but the BASE of the board is made from 3 items:
- No Sugar Added SunButter
- Chocolate SunButter – if you haven’t tried it yet, order some ASAP!!!
- Homemade Raspberry Chia Jam
For the original SunButter you really want to use a variety with no added sugar (either the No Sugar Added or Organic) because the sweetness from the Chocolate SunButter, plus your toppings (see below) impart enough sweetness.
But did you know that the Chocolate SunButter only has 4 grams of added sugar per 2 tablespoon serving? This is MUCH lower than other chocolate/nut butter products, FYI!
I decided to use homemade raspberry chia jam (<– like this recipe linked) for this snack board because it has no added sugar and adds FIBER to your snack. Both raspberries and chia seeds are packed with fiber! Plus, it’s super easy to make so I always keep a jar in the fridge.
How to Make a SunButter Board
Now the fun begins! It’s honestly so easy to make a SunButter Board because they’re supposed to be slightly messy! There are no rules to it, like most recipes.
There are five components to your snack board, including…
- The board itself. Wood is porous, so be sure to clean your wooden boards well. You can also use a ceramic, bamboo or plastic plate too.
- The base layer. This is all the SunButter and chia jam goodness.
- Toppings. Fun additions to add flavor.
- Dippers. How to sop up the goodness.
- Flaky salt. Seriously, don’t skip it!
Start with a board or platter that’s appropriately sized for the amount of guests you’re feeding.
Next, to form the base layer alternate dollops of original SunButter, Chocolate SunButter and Raspberry Chia Jam to cover the majority of the board. Leave a border around the edges to put your dippers (see below).
Of course you can use any substitutions you see fit. No time to let your chia jam thicken? Use whatever jam you have in the fridge.
Don’t have Chocolate SunButter? 1. You should get some, but 2. Skip it and use more original SunButter!
Toppings are small flavorful additions. As a dietitian and mom I like to add some nutrition enhancers, like sliced fruit (I used bananas, as you can see below) and/or dried fruit (like raisins). I also add some fun, like chocolate chips!
Next, you’ll add plenty of dippers around the border so you can scoop up the base layer and toppings.
For this SunButter Board I used the following dippers:
- Carrot chips – these are so fun for any dip
- Celery stalks – gives you ants on a log vibe with the raisins
- Graham crackers
- Buttery crackers – for that salty kick
- Dates
You could also use:
- Pretzel sticks/rods
- Toast triangles
- Pita bread
- Strawberries
- SPOONS!
How do you think of what to add to your board?
Think of how you like to enjoy SunButter.
Personally, I love ANTS ON A LOG, which is why I added:
- Celery
- Raisins
- SunButter
I also love CHOCOLATE SUNBUTTER DATES, so I included:
- Dates
- Chocolate SunButter
- Chocolate chips
There’s nothing better than a SALTY CRACKER with SunButter and Jelly, so I added both:
- Buttery crackers
- SunButter
- Raspberry Chia Jam
- Bananas
The options are endless! What will you include on your board?
