Did you know May is Food Allergy Awareness Month? More specifically, this year Food Allergy Awareness Week is May 10-16, 2020.

As someone living with food allergies and a registered dietitian, I feel so passionate about helping others navigate what to eat to feel their best, within the scope of their allergies.

Even more, I hope to be able to make food fun! Navigating what to eat with food allergies can be overwhelming, anxiety-producing, and downright scary, so when you can add more fun into your food, the better off you are (and the better relationship with food you can nurture).

And when I’m trying to make food more fun, I always turn to DIPS!

Dips are also a great way to eat more nutrients (think pesto, guacamole, salsa, hummus…), but in a fun way with creative dippers!

This month, snack time is getting a simple upgrade (with pantry staples), with this Healthy Chocolate Hummus!

Healthy Chocolate Hummus actually has very few ingredients overlapping as traditional hummus. OK, maybe there are no overlapping ingredients except for salt.

This recipe uses black beans, cocoa powder, and SunButter blended together for a chocolatey dip that can double as a dessert dish! It’s thicker than chocolate pudding and chocolate icing, but still delicious to eat with a spoon!

In fact, I may or may not have been eating a spoonful to quench my sweet tooth after lunch and dinner for the past week!

Ingredients in Healthy Chocolate Hummus

There are only a handful of nourishing ingredients in this Healthy Chocolate Hummus.

Black beans are the base of this hummus. Packed with plant-based protein and fiber, beans will keep you full for hours. I used canned beans in this recipe to avoid soaking and then cooking the beans. Plus, canned beans soak for a long time so they’re easier to digest. Be sure to drain and rinse the beans REALLY well. You want to avoid any “beany” taste to this dessert dip.

No Added Sugar SunButter adds healthy fats and another layer of flavor to this dip. Traditional hummus uses tahini, but I swapped in SunButter (<– use this link to get $7 or 20% off your order, code is automatically applied at checkout!) for a more allergy-friendly take. You can substitute any SunButter variety you’d like. If you use one with added sugar, you may want to cut back on the sugar you add.

Cocoa powder provides the bulk of the chocolatey flavor to this Healthy Chocolate Hummus. I use unsweetened cocoa powder so I can decide how much sweetness to add. This is my favorite allergy-friendly cocoa powder.

Milk or an Allergy-Friendly substitute helps the rest of your ingredients blend together smoothly. I always suggest adding the liquid into your blender first for best results.

Sugar adds a touch of sweetness to this recipe. I used granulated sugar, but you can use any sweetener you have on hand. I think granulated sugar has the most milk taste. If you use a liquid sweetener like honey or maple syrup, you’ll definitely be able to taste those warm flavors in the dip. The same is true if you wanted to swap in dates or date sugar to use a natural sugar instead. You can do it, but the flavor won’t be as mild.

Chocolate chips add an extra layer of chocolatey deliciousness to this dip. I wouldn’t omit them, but you could for a smoother, almost icing-like consistency. These are my favorite mini chocolate chips!

How to Make Healthy Chocolate Hummus

Of all the things you can buy in a store pre-made, hummus (and salad dressing, but I digress) are probably two of the easiest things you can DIY at home.

You simply add all of the ingredients to a high-powered blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Yes, it’s that easy.

Simply add the milk, black beans, SunButter, cocoa powder, and sugar into a blender. Add a pinch of salt if you wish. Then blend until smooth.

Now, you may need to pause to scrape down the side of the container before continuing to blend. This ensures you don’t find a whole bean in there… because that totally kills the chocolate mood!

Then fold in the mini chocolate chips. You can use any chocolate chips you have on hand, but I find the minis are best because they don’t require a lot of chewing. You can also chop up a chocolate bar if you don’t have any minis on hand.

Apples dipped in chocolate brownie batter dip

Now you may be thinking, “What do I eat with this chocolate hummus?”

Rest assured, I’m here to tell you!

Personally, I think it’s delicious enough by the spoonful, but I understand that you may want to make your kids (or yourself) a snack plate with this healthy chocolate hummus.

Here are some suggestions to pair with this healthy chocolate hummus:

  • Apple slices
  • Strawberries
  • Banana slices (with toothpicks)
  • Baby carrots (I know it sounds weird, but it’s oddly good!)
  • Pretzel flats, rods, or stick (oooo salty + sweet!!!)
  • Graham crackers
  • Alphabet cookies
  • Dried apricots (the flat surface is key!)

Personally, when my son is old enough I’ll make him this and serve it with fruit and cookies so he can self-regulate what he wants to eat.
