Canned food unnecessarily gets a bad rap. In honor of National Canned Foods Month, I want to highlight the versatility of canned foods to help you reach your health goals.

Whether you want to eat more sustainably, prepare meals quicker, or focus on healthy combinations for your family, canned foods can play a role to make healthy happen.

Canned foods are…

  • Nutritious
  • Sustainable
  • Delicious
  • Easy
  • Convenient
  • Environmentally friendly
  • More affordable than fresh
  • A pantry staple
  • Versatile

Perhaps my favorite things about canned foods are their convenience and versatility. You can whip up a quick meal for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or even make a delicious and nutritious dessert from canned foods.

Every pantry should have a row of canned foods stocked. Just consult my Dietitian-Approved Pantry Staples List!

Meal Prep with Canned Foods

Even more, if you’re trying to get into the habit of meal prep, canned foods can be a lifesaver. Instead of soaking and cooking beans, for example, you can pop open a can, rinse them, and prepare a simple quinoa salad or chili in minutes.

Instead of slicing and dicing unripe tomatoes in the winter, you can pop open a can of diced tomatoes or crushed tomatoes for ratatouille, for example. You can even get dessert involved by using canned fruit (I prefer canned fruit packed in its own juices, so there’s no added sugar) or even canned beans (like these desserts made from canned beans).

I want you to reap the benefits of the convenience of canned foods, so I’ve rounded up 65 healthy recipes using canned foods.
