Friday Fun: Weekend in The District

Sometimes a stay-cation or quick weekend getaway is JUST what you need to refresh, reboot, and reinvigorate for SPRING! Last weekend I did just that in our nation’s capital —

Washington D.C.!DC scene

My boyfriend and I headed down Friday afternoon, and arrived to Union Station with a beautiful view of the Capitol, mild weather, and the perfect change of scenery we both needed!DC GT waterfront adjusted

We headed straight to dinner on the Georgetown waterfront at Farmers Fishers Bakers. It had quite the view of Virginia across the water (right, my friend Ali & me)! This farm to table restaurant is one of many in the District, and I definitely felt like my salmon was straight from the water (I needed my omega 3s!). The expansive menu and enormous bar list was perfect to satisfy a variety of palates! It was great to catch up with old friends, walk around Georgetown (so cute!), and thoroughly enjoy an evening without freezing (I’m SO over NY winter!!!).

The next morning we woke up early to brunch (I know, all we did was eat!) with his cousin before a full day of sightseeing! I’ve been told that brunch in D.C. is an institution…and the best of the best is Founding Farmers! What a cute name, right?get it??? I fueled up for the day with an egg white veggie scramble with a homemade English muffin that was to die for…thick, with just the right crunch on the crust! For “brunch-ert” (brunch + dessert) the three of us shared maple cinnamon syrup pancakes 😉 YUM! (It’s vacation…have to live a little!)

Now, we were ready for the sights!

First, we visited Mr. President at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue….The White House! White House Protests

[But we were really looking for Olivia Pope!]

Then we headed to the Washington Monument to have some fun!DC wash monument point

We passed the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, & Korean War Memorial on our way to see our BFF, Abe (who loves a good selfie, by the way!)…DC Lincoln

D.C. must be one of the healthiest and fittest cities in the country because there were SO many people weaving their way, running, biking, or walking, between the colossal structures we were visiting. AND there was the Rock n’ Roll Marathon that day (congrats to all you runners!)!

Fun fact! There’s a law which limits the height of buildings in DC, so it’s a relatively low lying city. Contrary to popular belief, the height restriction isn’t limited to the height of the Capitol or Washington Monument (555 feet), but the width of the adjacent street (+20 feet).

After passing the Capitol and museum mile, we headed to the highest court in all the land (United States Supreme Court) for a PRIVATE tour from one of Chief Justice Roberts’ clerks! Thank you Judd!

We headed to Barcelona for dinner on Saturday night. With a hopping bar scene, this Spanish-inspired tapas restaurant provided a delicious meal with a great atmosphere! DC Barcelona foodWe ordered grilled shrimp in a garlic sauce, cauliflower a la plancha, blistered shishito peppers, and mussels a diablo! Paired with warm bread and an incredible selection of goat cheese our waiter encouraged, this meal was indulgent and bursting with flavor! The night came to a close with a beautiful walk around Dupont Circle (and a hunt for dessert…it’s vacation!)

The next morning I grabbed coffee and headed to the Dupont Circle Farmers Market with my friend (Farmers market !!!!). Everything was fresh, albeit expensive! This was one of the priciest farmers markets I’ve seen, contrary to usual marked down prices that come straight from farmers! Nevertheless, I enjoyed the samples, picked up a few apples of the train ride home, and took some great pictures admiring the kale!

We went for a farewell lunch with all of our D.C. friends, then enjoyed one last chilly walk around the city before returning to the train to hurry home before the nor’easter, which hit the District Sunday evening (c’mon winter!!!).

I have to say this was one weekend getaway for the books! Thanks to everyone who was a part of it!!!

P.S. HAPPY SPRING!!!! How are you celebrating this weekend??? Til Monday…XO
