What’s chocolatey, fruity, and refreshing all at the same time?
Chocolate Strawberry Nice Cream!
You are seriously going to love my latest nice cream flavor! Growing up, chocolate covered strawberries were one of my favorite treats. We only had them maybe once or twice a year, but they always hit the spot. The combination of chocolate and strawberries is one for the books!
So, it was only natural that I take this classic duo and turn it into one of my favorite summertime treats – nice cream!
What is nice cream?
Now, it’s no secret that I’m nice cream obsessed. “Nice cream” or banana ice cream is simply an ice cream-like frozen dessert that’s made from blending together frozen bananas.
What I love so much is that it’s allergy-friendly (unless you’re allergic to bananas, of course). It’s perfect for the many individuals that are lactose intolerant or dairy-free. Everyone should be able to enjoy a refreshing, frozen summer treat!
You can make 2-ingredient “nice cream” with just bananas and any liquid you wish. Or you can get creative with your flavor combinations.
The very first banana ice cream flavor that I shared was a Salted Double Chocolate Chip. Over the years, I’ve made a new banana ice cream flavor every year. Personally, my favorite nice creams are those with a chocolatey base, like how I started. You can amp up the chocolate flavor without using much added sugar because bananas are naturally sweet.
How to Make Chocolate Strawberry Nice Cream
As mentioned previously, classic nice cream is a blend of bananas and liquid. When bananas blend together they get super creamy, not icy like many other fruits.
But to ramp up the creaminess, I prefer to use a creamy dairy-free milk alternative. None of that watered-down stuff!
Lately, my favorite milk alternative to use is flaxseed milk. I partnered with Manitoba Milling Co. because they make such creamy flaxseed milk that’s made from blending together flaxseeds. Good quality ground flax has a very smooth texture, so when turned into milk, it’s the ultimate creamy plant-based alternative.
Manitoba Milling Co. doesn’t strain their flax milk either, so you reap the benefits of whole milled flaxseeds when you consume the flax milk.
Health benefits of flaxseeds:
- Heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, including essential ALA omega-3 fatty acids
- 4 grams of fiber per serving
- 3 grams of plant-based protein per serving
Manitoba Milling Co.’s flax milk will be available at manitobaflax.com and locally in NYC soon (but for now I highly suggest ordering their milled flaxseed).
Tips to Make the Best Chocolate Nice Cream
Honestly, making nice cream is SO SIMPLE, but over the years I’ve learned some essential tips that I’m excited to share with you.
1. Slice bananas and freeze on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
This allows for easy blending. I used to freeze bananas whole or break them into 3 or 4 chunks, but spending the time slicing and freezing is worth it!
2. Always keep frozen banana slices in your freezer during the summer.
You’re welcome! Trust me, you want the bananas frozen when your craving for nice cream hits!
3. Add liquid to your blender first.
This may seem like a minor detail, but it ensures your nice cream blends together easily and you don’t have to process like crazy.
4. Add half of your bananas, then the cocoa powder, then the other half of your bananas.
If you’re making your nice cream in a blender, this is key. It’s another minor detail, but it makes it MUCH easier for the cocoa powder to blend easily throughout your nice cream. Take it from someone who has emptied out half of the nice cream from the blender, mixed in the cocoa powder manually, and then added it back… yada yada… it just cuts down on your mess and makes the process quicker.
5. Freeze your nice cream before scooping.
After blending, the mixture is a bit “loose.” This ensures you get a nice scoop, as pictured.
Ingredients in Chocolate Strawberry Nice Cream
There are only 5 ingredients in Chocolate Strawberry Nice Cream. OK, 6 if you count the sprinkle of salt.
Flax Milk is key in this recipe. It helps all of the ingredients blend together well and adds a touch of creaminess that’s make or break. Since Manitoba Milling Co.’s flax milk is made from whole milled flaxseeds, it contains healthy fats that contribute to the perfect mouthfeel in this healthier frozen dessert. Keep your eyes peeled for Manitoba Milling Co.’s flax milk, hitting NY store shelves soon!!
Bananas are the base of this recipe. Bananas contain potassium, vitamin C, magnesium, and many more nutrients!
Strawberries are another important component in this chocolate strawberry nice cream. You can swap in any berry, but I think strawberries are the perfect combination of sweet and fruity. Plus, strawberries are chock full of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.
Cocoa powder lends a punch of chocolatey flavor. I prefer unsweetened cocoa powder because there’s enough natural sweetness from the fruit. Plus, did you know that cocoa powder provides a punch of flavonoids, a type of antioxidant?
Mini chocolate chips are the only source of added sugar in this recipe. For a 100% added sugar-free treat you could omit them, but I’m a fan of stuff in my ice cream and think they add great texture! You can swap in cacao nibs for a no added sugar dessert.
