Thanksgiving is around the corner – can you believe it?
As if it’s hard to imagine, Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays (hello, it’s food-centric!). Over the past few years, sharing my family’s holiday traditions with my husband has been so fun (he still has yet to participate with my brothers in the annual early-morning football game – hint, hint!).
The first Thanksgiving I spent with my husband he went CRAZY over whether or not my family would have the “traditional” Thanksgiving food. (After all, my dad is a vegan, and he cooks the turkey…)
I can’t say I blame him… There are a couple of traditional items that my family does differently than most… including mashed potatoes!
I know… it’s SO traditional, but my mom never liked them, so she doesn’t make them. She usually makes the kiddie sweet potato/marshmallow version, but never straight up mashed potatoes.
Well, I’ve been on a mission to give my husband what he wants, and this Healthy Sweet Potato Mash fits the bill!

But can you guess my secret ingredients?
I used CAULIFLOWER to lighten this one up!
And I can already imagine what you’re thinking – but it’s THANKSGIVING, why would you do that? But the reality is that you can barely taste the cauliflower with the layers and layers of flavor, thanks to my second secret ingredient – New Chapter’s Fermented Turmeric Booster Powder!
There’s nothing wrong (in my opinion) with making some traditional dishes lighter and boosting the nutrition. We’re in holiday overload right now, so why not help yourself feel better?
Food is meant to be enjoyed, but it can also help us navigate this busy season of life by giving us a boost.
That’s why I’ve been using New Chapter’s fermented booster powders in anything and everything I can lately.
I’ll use the maca in my morning oatmeal bowls, stir some aloe into my yogurt, and add the turmeric to anything and everything… including this Healthy Sweet Potato Mash.
So let’s talk science… why FERMENTED turmeric?
Fermented turmeric allows for optimal absorption of this “superfood” spice. Typically, turmeric pairs with black pepper to increase absorption, but since it’s fermented, it’s already in a super absorbable state – how cool is that?
Turmeric promotes better:
- Brain and cognitive health
- Heart health
- Gastrointestinal function
- Inflammation support
- And more!
These beneficial effects are thanks to the active compound, curcumin, found in turmeric.
Curcumin is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substance. Traditionally, curcumin isn’t readily absorbed by the body, but thanks to the special fermentation process of New Chapter’s Fermented Turmeric Booster Powder, it’s better absorbed, so you can actually reap the benefits of this powerful compound.
Using fermented turmeric in this healthy sweet potato mash helps you further absorb the active compounds because this recipe contains FAT… and curcumin is fat-soluble (meaning you want to consume it with fat for optimal absorption)!
This Healthy Sweet Potato Mash is…
- Full of easily ABSORBED nutrients
- Vegan
- Gluten free
- Grain free
- Perfect for a healthier Thanksgiving
- DELICIOUS!
Let’s get cookin’…
Ingredients
- 8 cups cauliflower florets (from 1 large head of cauliflower)
- 2 cups cooked sweet potato flesh (flesh from 2 1/2 medium-sized sweet potatoes)
- 2 Servings New Chapter’s Fermented Turmeric Booster Powder
- 1/2 cup milk or dairy-free alternative (I used coconut milk)
- 1 tablespoon butter (Or non-dairy alternative, if needed)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Optional: 1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
Instructions
- Steam cauliflower: bring about 1/4 inch of water to a boil in a large stock pot with a steamer inside (the water should not pass through the steamer). When water is boiling, add cauliflower and cover the pot. Steam until very soft to fork, about 12-15 minutes.
- Add flesh from sweet potatoes to a large bowl. Mash with a potato masher.*
- When the cauliflower is done steaming, and cooled to touch, add to high-powered blender to blend with milk [alternative].
- Mix blended cauliflower with the potatoes. Add butter, New Chapter Fermented Turmeric Booster Powder, salt, and maple syrup (if desired), stirring until uniform consistency forms. Serve warm.
Notes
*Note: For a smoother mash, blend potatoes with cauliflower, do not mash by hand. I prefer the texture when the potatoes are mashed by hand.
