It’s mid-summer and definitely time for a refreshing beverage, amIright?! Say hello to your newest go-to summer snack…
Healthy Frozen Hot Chocolate!!
If you’ve never heard of frozen hot chocolate, it’s a milkshake-like beverage that was created by the owners of New York City’s Serendipity café. It’s made with milk or cream, chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate.
And it’s absolutely delicious!
In the winter, I’m a hot chocolate lover, and drink it most nights, so I was really excited to re-create this frozen treat that’s perfect for the summer… with ingredients that help you FEEL GOOD too!
Healthy Frozen Hot Chocolate is…
- Chocolatey
- Refreshing
- Creamy
- Allergy-friendly and vegan
- Packed with nutritious ingredients
- Filling
- Easy to make
What makes this version of frozen hot chocolate “healthy?”
While “healthy” can be a polarizing word (there’s nothing wrong with foods that aren’t “healthy,” so I typically prefer to use words like “nourishing” or “more nutrient dense” instead), there are a few things that make this recipe “healthy…”
1. There are all whole food ingredients
Most of us could do with fewer processed ingredients. Even the Chocolate SunButter used in this recipe is made with 100% real, whole food ingredients.
2. There’s a balance of protein, healthy fats, and carbs
Balancing your snacks (or even dessert) can help stabilize blood sugar. Plus, eating a combination of nutrients help keep you full longer.
3. There’s minimal added sugar
This recipe is primarily sweetened with bananas. Minimal added sugar helps stabilize your blood sugar levels to avoid big swings in blood sugar levels.
So, what nourishing ingredients are in this frozen hot chocolate?
Ingredients in Healthy Frozen Hot Chocolate
You can make this delicious healthy frozen hot chocolate with just 5 ingredients, plus ice and a pinch of salt.
You’ll need:
- Dairy-free milk
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Chocolate SunButter
- Avocado
- Banana
Dairy free milk makes this smoothie super creamy. Of course, you can use regular milk if you don’t need a dairy free treat! I used pea milk because that’s what we have in our fridge.
If you do choose to use dairy milk, I would recommend AGAINST fat-free milk. You need the fat for added creaminess and to stay full.
That’s also why I’m a fan of pea milk in this recipe – it’s super creamy and packed with protein for some staying power.
Unsweetened cocoa powder makes this frozen hot chocolate extra chocolatey. I like to use unsweetened cocoa powder so I can control the amount of sweetness added. But you do you!
Chocolate SunButter adds so much creaminess and extra chocolatey flavor. Don’t skip this step! Plus, SunButter is full of healthy fats and protein too, making this a snack that’s actually nutritious and filling!
Avocado adds extra creaminess instead of cream or ice cream. Plus, the heart-healthy fats make this frozen hot chocolate extra creamy.
Banana adds natural sweetness and extra oomph to the frozen hot chocolate.
This is a THICK smoothie, so a spoon is definitely needed at first. As you keep eating it will definitely thin out more.
How to Make Healthy Frozen Hot Chocolate
I always feel silly calling smoothie-like recipes a “recipe” because they’re so simple.
Just add all of the ingredients to a high-powered blender and blend away! I used my Vitamix.
Is a Vitamix worth it?
I’m always asked, “Is a Vitamix worth it?” and honestly, it is! We’ve had ours for almost 6 years without a hitch and we use it several times each week.
Some of my favorite Vitamix recipes include:
- Healthy Cake Batter Dip
- Sheet Pan Blender Green Pancakes
- Roasted Carrot Apple Soup
- Pumpkin Blender Muffins
- Avocado Miso Dressing
Kitchen Tools You Need to Make this Recipe
In addition to a high-powered blender, you’ll need:
- Ice maker or ice cube tray
- Avocado saver (for when you don’t use a whole avocado)
- High-powered blender
How to Serve Healthy Frozen Hot Chocolate
I served this delicious smoothie-like treat in these mason jars with a handle. It would also be fun to use an old-fashioned milkshake glass, like these.
Healthy Frozen Hot Chocolate is also delicious served with whipped cream on top and an extra dollop of Chocolate SunButter for good measure!
