Have you heard of the infamous 2-ingredient “dough” going around the internet?! I’m not sure who originally discovered that if you combine yogurt and self-rising flour that you can make bagels, pizza, and more, but I finally tried it and I’m a fan!
I’m not one to bake bread from scratch (I have no patience for proofing and rising and the like), but this dough I can handle because it’s SO easy and usable right away (read: no waiting time for it to rise!)!
The first time I tried one of these easy dough recipes I made a traditional pizza in my cast iron skillet. It was delicious and the bottom got nice and crispy, but I definitely prefer traditional pizza.
But then I saw someone make cinnamon rolls from the dough and I got the idea to make PIZZA ROLLS!!!
Specifically, Healthy Homemade Pizza Rolls with just 7 nourishing ingredients that will actually help you FEEL GOOD!
In just over 30 minutes total (most of which is hands-off baking time), you’ll have gooey, melted cheese and delicious sauce oozing out of a doughy spiral. They make a great appetizer for a crowd, or an easy dinner. Kids will love them too! And even more, kids will love to get involved in the kitchen for this recipe! But if you know me, you know they’re also a great breakfast option!
These Healthy Homemade Pizza Rolls are…
- Delicious!
- Easy to make
- Higher in protein than traditional pizza
- Fun to customize with your favorite fillings
- Easy to turn into a balanced meal
Ingredients to Make Homemade Pizza Rolls
You only need 7 ingredients to make these homemade pizza rolls…
- Greek yogurt
- White whole wheat flour (or all-purpose flour)
- Baking powder
- Oregano
- Garlic powder
- Marinara sauce
- Mozzarella cheese
The base of the dough is made from the first three ingredients: Greek yogurt, flour, and baking powder.
Alternatively you could use “self-rising flour,” but I find that more people probably have all-purpose flour or white whole wheat flour in their pantry already and can easily add the baking powder to make it “self-rising.”
The remaining four ingredients are a starting point for you to bring the pizza concept to life! Dried oregano and garlic powder add more flavor to the dough. Feel free to also add basil, red chili flakes, or any other spices you love to add to pizza.
Then, you’ll fill the pizza rolls with sauce and cheese. This is where it gets fun… you can add ANY pizza topping you love, including…
- Peppers
- Onions
- Pepperoni (or turkey pepperoni)
- Grilled chicken
- Baked eggplant
Just keep in mind that you don’t want to overfill the rolls because they will expand a bit when they cook. Also, any vegetable that loses a ton fo water through the cooking process (like mushrooms, for instance) you may want to pre-cook before adding into the pizza rolls so most of the water cooks out.
How to Make Healthy Homemade Pizza Rolls
There are 3 key steps to make these homemade pizza rolls:
- Make the dough
- Roll out the dough, fill it, roll back up
- Bake!
Oh and a fourth if you want to include eating them!
How to Make “2-Ingredient” Pizza Dough
As I mentioned earlier, I’m not one to make super complicated doughs, so you know this is easy! Simply mix together flour, Greek yogurt and baking powder as the base of the dough. I always start mixing with a spoon, but then find it’s easiest to use my hands to knead it. To enhance the pizza flavor I also added dried oregano and garlic powder to the dough.
Once your dough comes together in one ball it’s time to make the pizza rolls…
Roll out the dough into a large square as best you can. It’s OK if it’s not perfect!!! If you don’t have a rolling pin at home, that’s ok – use a large glass (check out my IG reel – that’s what I did too!).
Next, it’s time to add your fillings. Spread the sauce over the dough. Remember you’ll be rolling this into a long log, so you don’t want to over-sauce – that’s a recipe for oozing pizza rolls (and not in the best way)! Sprinkle the cheese on top, along with any other toppings you want to add.
And now you roll…
Starting from one end, tightly roll the dough lengthwise until there is no more dough left. If some sauce and cheese come out the end, that’s OK!
Cut into about 10 equal pieces (about 1 1/4 inches each) and place in a small baking dish or on a baking sheet. Personally, I like when they all stick together a little bit because they’re fun to pull apart.
Bake for just 18-20 minutes, or until the dough looks golden and the cheese is all melted.
Enjoy warm – this is key!
This recipe is best enjoyed warm from the oven. Leftovers can be reheated in the oven, but they’re best fresh.
