If you’ve been a long-time reader of CitNutritionally.com, then you know cocktails aren’t exactly my go-to recipe. In fact, there’s only 1 other cocktail recipe on my entire blog!

But when I’m given the challenge, like I was for this month’s Recipe Redux, I love playing mixologist!

This month’s Recipe Redux theme is…

We’re seeing probiotic cocktails and gut-health mocktails popping up on trendy drink menus. Show us your favorite way to bring these healthy beverages onto your own kitchen cocktail menu.

Immediately, my mind went to a kombucha cocktail!

If you’re not familiar with kombucha, it’s a fermented tea drink that’s carbonated, somewhat sweet, and has a bit of a “yeasty” flavor, as some describe it. There are many different kombucha brands, with a variety of flavors, from mango to ginger. Obviously, I opted to use a ginger version in this cocktail!

I knew kombucha would be the perfect gut-healthy addition to my cocktail of choice because it provides the fizz, it’s tart, but also a little sweet, and has that taste of fermentation.

If that last point makes you go more “eww” than “tell me more,” I’m telling you to still try this! Not only will your gut thank you, but so will your taste buds… promise 😉

So why kombucha and what does it do for your health?

Kombucha-advocates tout it for its gut-boosting bacteria and yeast.

Bacteria and yeast that are good for your gut?

Absolutely! Your microbiome, or gut bacteria and microorganisms, is home to about 80% of your immune system. That’s why there’s so much research dedicated to gut health and the associations it has to other aspects of health, like mental health, chronic illnesses, and more. So that’s why these gut-healthy cocktails are becoming so popular.

But this isn’t about new research… it’s about the cocktails! With Memorial Day Weekend around the corner, it’s the perfect time to share another cocktail recipe with you!

My Ginger Lemon Kombucha Cocktail is…

  • Fizzy
  • Full of ginger and lemon flavor
