Quick and easy dinners are a MUST in our home. Who wants to slave over a hot stove after a long day at work?
Not I said the fly!
That’s where these Salmon Avocado Burgers come in…
After sharing hundreds of recipes, there are only a handful that I make over and over (and over) again. This is one of those go-to recipes that I make ALL the time.
What’s better than just a handful of ingredients thrown together, cooked up, and thrown on a bun?!
When I originally shared this recipe, over 3 years ago, I ate a mostly vegetarian diet, rarely eating fish and never meat. I called myself a “flexitarian.”
Although I’m not usually a fan of diet labels, I am rather fond of that one! Because that’s exactly what I think our diets should be – FLEXIBLE!
As I wrote 3 years ago, “I undoubtedly believe that we MUST listen to our bodies!!! Get in touch with your hunger and satiety signals (we lose them around age 5 if we’re not careful!). If we eat when we’re hungry and stop when we’re full, pounds will appear to fall off and true nourishment will begin!”
Yup, still practicing what I preach! It’s so fun to see that these basic nutrition principles that I discovered while in grad school are the cornerstone of my private practice today!

But our needs change over time, which is why it’s essential to learn to listen to your body. Eight years ago I just wanted plants… now I’m eating more animal products than I have in a long time…
And when I look back on this post 3 years from now, I’m sure my body’s needs will shift again. That’s LIFE – it ebbs and flows!
But one thing I know (or at least my tastebuds hope) will be the same… my love for these Salmon Avocado Burgers!
Talk about a quick weeknight dinner your entire family will love! I was obsessed with this recipe years ago, and I still am today… so I knew it was time for a facelift!
These Salmon Avocado Burgers are…
- Packed with protein
- Loaded with omega 3 fatty acids (to help reduce inflammation)
- Easy to whip up in less than 30 minutes
- A food source of vitamin D – which is rarely found in food (it’s potent in salmon)
- A good source of calcium, which is found in canned salmon
- Made with pantry staples
About those pantry staples…
Canned salmon is always in my pantry – but I make sure I choose quality sources.
- First, I make sure cans are BPA-free and free of dents or bulges.
- Then, I aim to buy wild salmon. Several studies have shown that wild salmon has superior health benefits than farm-raised salmon.
There are several brands with high quality products. Here are some of my favorites:
Salmon Avocado Burgers
Ingredients
- 12 oz canned salmon (I used Wild Alaskan canned salmon without skin)
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Pinch of salt and pepper
- 1 medium avocado, diced
- Buns (whole wheat, pepper slices, lettuce wraps, roasted sweet potato slices, etc.)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
- Flake salmon into a medium-sized bowl. Add all other ingredients, except for avocado, and mix until well combined.
- To avoid green burgers, add avocado and gently combine so you still have some chunks visible.
- Form into 4 patties and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
- Cook for about 10 minutes, then remove from oven and carefully flip, and cook for another 10 minutes, until a golden crust forms.
- Serve on a whole grain bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and more avocado or a top a large salad! Enjoy!
Mmm I think these would go well with my lemon avocado dressing or a side of my favorite zoodle salad!
Has your diet changed over the years?

What exactly do you mean the updated version? You can email me citnutritionally@gmail.com for questions!
I’m all about listening to our bodies too! I don’t think mine could live without seafood, especially salmon. I make a similar salmon burger ever week, but never thought to put avocado in them. Awesome idea!
Love a good salmon burger!
I love a good salmon burger and these look A-MAZ-ING! Incorporating avocado into the patty sounds awesome!
Thanks so much, Sonali! I think it’s delicious! 🙂
This recipe looks like an easy work week meal that my entire family will enjoy. Looking forward to trying it. Have you ever used veganaise on the bun?
Of course you can use veganase! My favorite is just more avocado (I can never have enough!), but if you like veganase, enjoy!
