One Tomato, Two Tomato, Red Tomato, Yellow Tomato
Let’s talk about one of my favorite fruits…TOMATOES!
There are seemingly a million different types of tomatoes in every color stocked on supermarket shelves and even more popping up in farmer’s markets this season; Red tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes…not to mention kumatos (cucumber + tomato), beefsteak, roma, etc!
I die for the sweet scent of fresh tomatoes and had the luxury of visiting home with perfect timing to pick one of nature’s best candies straight off the vine from dad’s garden! And the best part about picking tomatoes- that scent sticks to your hand like citrus does for hours!
As a little girl, jumping off my swing set to get a snack of home-grown string beans or tomatoes nearby was a summer must! I think I wish I grew up on a farm, but picking fresh veggies was all in a typical summer day anyway!
To be honest, this year I’ve had quite the crush on yellow tomatoes. I’ve found them in mainstream supermarkets in addition to my local farmer’s market and in countless summer salads I’ve eaten in restaurants around New York. But yesterday I cheated on my delicious yellow tomatoes in favor of the ORANGE tomatoes I found in my backyard.
They’re extra juicy, the perfect size to pop in your mouth and enjoy with any meal or snack. Most people would make some sauce to store for winter with their fresh crop, but I ate them too quickly straight from the vine! What about you?
Do you have a vegetable garden this summer season? What’s your favorite veggie to grow/eat?!
I no longer can tend a veggie garden, but, when our children were very young, we grew many
vegetables in our back yard. Aside from how delicious a fresh-picked vegetable tasted, it was a
wonderful lesson for small children to learn how so much of their food was grown…..If your
living situations allow….try it!
